When the Taliban ruled Afghanistan, a media blackout was in effect. Radio waves were tightly controlled, newspapers disbanded and photographs were burned in the streets as an example. In 2001, the Taliban fell and a new band of journalists rapidly emerged in Kabul. Through four Afghan photographers, FRAME BY FRAME explores the rupture of identity by war, the residual effects of this war and media suppression on a people, and attempts to reclaim a narrative and sense of self through the photographic image.
